The Custom Design & Print Process

Are you looking for a stylish, custom designed letterpress print project like wedding invitations, announcements, business cards, stationery, note cards, posters? Perhaps you're interested in having your project produced in the most eco-friendly way possible? Boy are you in luck.

The first step in the custom design and print process is an initial consultation over email, phone, or ideally in person (if you're in the Chicago area). At this stage, I'll just be collecting some basic information about the nature of your project, show you possible paper and ink samples, sizes, and discuss design and quantity so I can prepare a cost estimate. Because every custom job is different, I don't have standard pricing and instead prepare detailed quotes based on the nature of your project.

Clients who wish to meet at my home studio in Rogers Park can look forward to a mini-tour of some of my equipment as well as a relaxing cup of tea from my vast selection! Everything at this point is free and you are under absolutely no obligation - just drop me a line to set up an appointment.

Moving forward, I'll want to have more in depth conversations about your piece(s). For larger projects, I may require a small deposit to begin the custom design and printing process. If your projects requires special inks, papers, or other materials, I'll want to make sure they are thoroughly vetted by my eco standards and tested for quality. If you're interested in having your junk mail and other scrap papers turned into custom handmade papers for your project via Personal Recycling, we'll spend some time discussing the various elements of your paper. If I'm designing the piece(s) for you, I'll take into account all the elements of look, feel, style, and texture you're looking for and provide as many mock-ups and proofs as you need in order for it to be just right. If you've already worked on a design yourself or with someone else, we'll need to take some time to make sure everything in the printing process will run smoothly.

After the design is finalized and you have signed off on final proofs, I am happy to provide an ink "draw down" on the paper materials of your choice. This will give you a better idea of what the ink and paper will look like together. You may also consider going one step further and having a press proof for an additional charge, which will show you exactly what your piece will look like once printed. Production times for different pieces vary by quantity, materials, and design complexity but will be estimated on your initial quote.
